lyrics

O sailors, dawdle at the rail
Mark well the shore, and furl the sail
For we are home, and we are well
With half our crew escaped from hell

The sea is vast, our ship is small
We can’t see anything at all
This is the last time we’re to port
So get your kicks, our time is short

Hold tight the girls and down your drink
Go taste the world try not to think
Try not to catch land’s heady spell
For when the day breaks, back to hell

We'll race across the wine dark sea
We'll live on salt, our moorings free
And when at last we spy the rocks
The siren's lair, her samite docks...
Then lash me to the mast as tight
As humans can, make sure it's right
And stop your ears with wax or else
You'll rot beneath the sunken shelf

And now the ropes are tight as drums
The boatswain’s nearly lost his thumbs
So get below and stop your ears
You wont be pleased with what you hear

And now I’m here against the mast
My crew all safe, alone at last
And I can hear the tinkling
Of music like stars twinkling

It’s just her voice, it’s no big deal
I’m smarter than some crab or seal
I’m best prepared to hear this tune
My name is carved in sovereign runes

No one around can draw my bow
No man nor beast a worthy foe
I saw the death of Patroclus
I am the great Odysseus

And that is why I’ve brought this knife
This tiny blade to save my life
So silly to have ropes so tight
Around my ribs on this wet night

And I remember why I’m here
I had it backwards in my ear
We need not fear the lady’s song
We’re silly fools, we had it wrong

I think I can get one arm free
I see her face across the sea
I hear her voice like dawn on silk
Like butter, gold and pouring milk

Like something out of dreams and dark
Like whispers in the mountains heart
Like mysteries of sky and fire
Like all the fears of thieves and liars

There’s nothing that is like this sound
And now I’ve got my legs unbound
And so you see, and off I go
No one will see, no one will know

For I am off to go caress
Her shining skin, her inky dress
Her spotted eyes, her silky hair
And I will crawl into her lair

And I will kiss the lips of night
As serpents hiss for my delight
And I am never coming back
I’m here to be a Siren’s snack!
